Last Week's Meeting - Friday 6th March

Title: NZ's election to the UN Security Council

- How was it accomplished & what does it mean?

Speaker: Colin Keating

NZ is a founding member of the United Nations, having taken part in 1945 in the United Nations Conference on International Organisation in San Francisco.

Colin gave the meeting an in-depth account of how NZ got a seat on the UN Security Council.

Since its formation, NZ has been actively engaged in the organisation.

NZ sees the UN as a means of collective security, mainly in the South Pacific region, particularly because NZ is a relatively small nation and has very little control over much larger countries or significant events.

The UN was also seen as a way of safe-guarding NZ, at the time, a somewhat fledgling country.

The successor NZ Governments also felt that the UN was an important political and military ally to have as it was an integral part of NZ's "Collective Security".

Visitors: Speaker Colin Keating, Peter Savage
Apologies: Nichola B., Bernard W., Paul C., Brian F., Stephen DB., Len K., David G., Arthur Y., Jean P.

  • WANTED - 2 young men to go to Rotary, Little Rock, Arkansas, USA - all expenses paid
  • DISTRICT GOVERNOR 2017-18 - Nominations sought by 14 March 2015
  • Port Nicholson Goalsetters Awards Dinner - Promises to be a great, fun night!

A big thank you to those who assisted and participated
to make the Big Dig a grand success!

The financial outcome will take a wee while to be sorted.

It was gratifying to see the effort of so many of our young folk
working so hard to help facilitate the process.
The combined effort of so many sure contributed
well towards the success of the event.

We are all very grateful! Sure was a fun day!
